The Exhibition

The ExhibitioN

Dates : 27 April – 29 June 2025
Venue: The Old Coastguard

Welcome to Horizon. EATDRINKSLEEP’s latest exhibition in Mousehole.

We bring together two artists whose work is inspired by the sublime sea and landscapes in which they live. Laura Terry’s paintings in oil are in contrast to Ceri Shaw’s ceramics in translucent Bone Chinas.

Despite their different mediums both are inspired by sweeping skies, long beaches and that constant, distant line that lies between them.

LAURA TERRY

About Laura

Born in Hong Kong to an English mother and Portuguese father, Laura worked as a freelance makeup artist in the fashion industry in Hong Kong and then London for many years. She moved to the Kent countryside with her husband to raise their children and gradually reduced her work in London. She completed a BA (Hons) in Fine Art through the University of Kent in 2010 and a PGCE in Art and Design at Canterbury Christ Church University to become an art teacher.

Feeling the need to focus her attention on painting full time, she left her job as Head of Art in 2020 and moved to the north coast of Cornwall, near Trebarweth Strand, in 2021.

Laura’s work is inspired by the ever-changing light and beautiful skies here in Cornwall. Her paintings develop through long walks and time spent sketching and soaking up the atmosphere of a place. Loving the visceral qualities of oil paint, working wet on wet allows her to go with the flow, letting the paint lead the development of the painting.

CERI SHAW

About Ceri

Ceri Shaw grew up in the West Country and has always been drawn back here to the places that hold memories for her. She has had a mixed and varied career, but has always been a maker. She worked as a studio assistant to Sasha Wardell and was awarded a 2-year apprenticeship through the ‘Adopt a Potter’ scheme. More recently she has studied Contemporary Art Practice at Bath Spa University.

Ceri chooses to use Fine Bone China, as it vitrifies at a high temperature which makes it translucent and almost glass-like. Less commonly used than porcelain, it is harder to work with. At the core of her work is the search for belonging in landscape, translating a sense of place and recording a location. Inspired by the wildness, unrelenting weather, seasonal changes and life cycles of nature are an endless source of wonder to her.

Holding her learned skills of craftsmanship close, Ceri has developed her own expressive style, continuing to test the boundaries of this medium whilst exploring ways in which the contemporary sublime can draw attention to the climate crisis, by providing a moment of connection to the natural world.
